Why Your Lower Back Keeps Hurting—and What to Do About It

  • May 5, 2025

It starts as a little stiffness when you wake up. Maybe it flares up after you’ve been sitting too long, or when you bend over to pick something up off the floor. You stretch, you rest, maybe take some ibuprofen—but the pain keeps coming back.

Sound familiar?

Lower back pain is one of the most common complaints we see at Off The Block Performance Physical Therapy. And we’re not alone—the American Physical Therapy Association reports that nearly two-thirds of adults will experience low back pain at some point. But here’s the thing: most people never address why it keeps happening. That’s where we come in.

1. It’s Not Always About the Back

Here’s what surprises a lot of people: your back might not actually be the problem.

Lower back pain is often a result of compensation. When other parts of your body—like your hips, glutes, or core—aren’t doing their job, your back picks up the slack. That can lead to irritation, inflammation, and eventually chronic pain.

Some of the most common contributors we see in our Easley and Central clinics include:

- Tight hip flexors from sitting too much

- Weak glutes or poor glute activation

- Limited core stability

- Restricted mobility in the mid-back (thoracic spine)

2. Stretching Feels Good—But It’s Not the Fix

Stretching your back can offer some short-term relief, but it doesn’t solve the problem. If you’re only stretching and not addressing the actual cause, you’re just hitting snooze on the pain—it’ll be back.

At Off The Block, our Doctors of Physical Therapy take a deeper look at how your body moves. We help you build strength where it matters and improve how your body works together so your back doesn’t keep taking the hit.

3. Your Spine Isn’t “Out of Alignment”

Let’s clear this one up: your spine isn’t fragile, and it’s not just “going out of place.”

What you’re feeling is usually muscle tension, joint sensitivity, or nerve irritation—not a slipped disc or bones that need to be “put back in.” The real answer? Intentional movement and strength. That’s where physical therapy shines.

4. What Physical Therapy Can Actually Do for You

We don’t just treat pain—we help you understand why it’s happening and what you can do about it.

At Off The Block Performance Physical Therapy, we create custom plans based on your lifestyle and your goals, whether that’s getting back to lifting, hiking, golfing, chasing your kids around, or just getting through the day without that nagging ache.

We focus on:

- Hands-on techniques to calm things down

-Targeted strength and mobility work

-Teaching you how to move better, so the pain stays away

It’s a smarter, longer-lasting approach than chasing pain with ice packs and painkillers.

Don’t Let Low Back Pain Keep You on the Sidelines

You shouldn’t have to avoid the activities you love because of your back. With the right guidance, you can move better, feel stronger, and take back control of your body.

If you’re ready to stop managing pain and start fixing it, we’re here for you.
