Your Hamstrings Might Not Be “Tight”—They Might Be Overworked

The sensation of tightness doesn’t always mean a muscle is short. In many cases, it’s actually overactive—doing work it’s not supposed to do because another muscle group isn’t pulling its weight.

Here are some common causes of persistent hamstring tightness:

- Weak glutes or core: If your glutes aren’t firing well, your hamstrings might be working overtime to stabilize your hips.

- Pelvic positioning: An anterior pelvic tilt (when your hips tip forward) can make your hamstrings feel stretched even at rest.

- Poor movement mechanics: If you hinge from your back instead of your hips, you’re constantly putting your hamstrings on stretch.

- Nerve tension: Sometimes, what feels like a “tight” hamstring is actually nerve irritation coming from your low back.


Why Static Stretching Alone Isn’t the Answer
